Selection Criteria

You must meet the General Entrance Requirements and the programme-specific entrance requirements.

For government-funded Bachelor's Degree programmes, students must also meet the cut-off scores that are set for individual programmes before they are further considered for admission. Applicants with scores that are below the cut-off scores will only be considered if they have good non-academic achievements. The cut-off can be found in the respective programme entries. Upon meeting the cut-off score, you will be further considered by the programme based on the relevant admission score. Please see the note and examples below for details on the calculation of these scores.

PolyU does not penalise applicants for subsequent attempts in the same public examination and considers the best grades in all public examination attempts. We also encourage secondary school students to take a wide range of subjects, and we take into consideration the results of all of the subjects that are attempted in public examinations. Similar subjects will, however, be considered once in calculating these scores. Weighting may be applied to certain subjects, such as Chinese Language in the GCE examination, in the calculation of admission scores. Some programmes may prefer students who have taken specific subjects and assign higher weighting to these. Please refer to the respective programme entries for information on preferred subjects, if any.

In addition to academic attainments, PolyU takes into consideration the non-academic achievements of applicants in the selection process.

Your academic achievements, non-academic achievements, other relevant information that you have provided and, where applicable, your interview/test performance, will be used to determine whether you make the final admission shortlist. You can refer to the respective programme entries for information on interview/test requirements. Because of keen competition, particularly for programmes with large numbers of applicants, applicants' programme choice may also be taken into consideration in the selection process.

Note: When calculating the cut-off score, all HKALE/AS and GCEAL/AS subject attainments are counted (except similar subjects which will be considered once), using the score of A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 and applying a weighting factor of 0.6 to AS subject attainments. For subjects with repeated attempts, the best grade is counted. A ratio of GCEAL/AS subjects to HKALE/AS subjects is also applied.

The method for calculating the admission score is similar to the calculation of the cut-off score except that in calculating the admission score, a higher subject weighting is applied to compulsory/preferred subjects, and for language programmes (i.e. 3387 & 3399) a weighting factor of 1 instead of 0.6 is applied to the AS English and Chinese Language subjects. Information on preferred subjects can be found in the respective programme entries.
