The University

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is the largest government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong, with a total student headcount of about 27,100, of which 13,500 are full-time students, 9,800 are part-time students, and 3,800 are mixed-mode students. It has a full-time academic staff of around 1,200.

Our mission is to provide high quality education of an applied nature that meets the changing requirements of the community, and to prepare you for the challenges in your future career.

The Campus

The PolyU campus is centrally located in Hung Hom, Kowloon and covers approximately 9.34 hectares. It is adjacent to the Cross Harbour Tunnel and easily accessible by public transport.

The campus has high-quality teaching facilities and infrastructure, including a multi-purpose auditorium with 1,025 seats and a studio theatre with 247 seats, which provide quality venues for performances, exhibitions, conferences and other student activities.

Our Student Halls of Residence, which are located in the Hung Hom Bay Reclamation Area, provide approximately 3,000 hostel places and offer a wide variety of communal facilities that enrich campus life.

With support from the government, the Phase 8 development is proceeding. Construction commenced in August 2009 and the anticipated completion date is in the second quarter of 2012. Upon completion, the development will provide accommodation of approximately 26,000m2 of net floor area for general teaching and research facilities, staff offices, conference facilities, cafeteria and communal space for the implementation of the new “3+3+4” academic system and other academic developments.

Planning for the Innovation Tower, a new development located on the north-eastern side of the campus, is also underway. Upon completion, the Tower will provide accommodation of approximately 15,000m2 net floor area, of which 3,000m2 will be self-financed. Although the School of Design will be the major user department, facilities and space for use by other departments and the PolyU community will also be provided. The building is also scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2012.

Another capital project currently in progress is the redevelopment of Pak Sui Yuen in Tsim Sha Tsui East. The foundations were completed in June 2008, and the superstructure is currently under construction. Apart from a teaching hotel with around 280 guest rooms, the premises will house conference facilities, teaching and research facilities, offices and staff quarters. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2010.

Following the completion in June 2007 of the Hung Hom Bay campus of the Hong Kong Community College, construction of the second campus in West Kowloon was completed according to schedule in late March 2008 and students and staff have been gradually moving into the building. These new campuses will provide comprehensive teaching and amenity facilities and infrastructure, including lecture theatres, classrooms, library, computer centres, multi-purpose rooms and halls, sky gardens, cafeterias and communal areas, for sub-degree students.

Subsequent to funding approval by the Government and the allocation of land, the design for the Student Hostel Phase 3 Development is in full swing and site works are scheduled to commence in October 2009.The hostel will be built at the junction of Chatham Road North and Fat Kwong Street, and is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2012. It will provide approximately 32,000m2 gross floor area for 1,650 hostel places, which will be required under the new “3+3+4” academic system and other academic developments.

Regarding development outside of Hong Kong, the construction works for the PolyU campus at the Shenzhen Virtual University Park are underway and are scheduled for completion by the end of 2009. The campus will provide 8,200m² of accommodation for research, offices, teaching and collaboration with business and industry.
